BMW Steyr: 1 billion euros for electric drives and new jobs!

With a strong investment program,

BMW relies on the future of electromobility in Steyr, Upper Austria. By the end of this decade, around one billion euros will flow into the expansion of the work, which not only remains as a location for petrol and diesel engines, but also gradually changes to the production of electrical drives. BMW is already planning to produce around 1.2 million engines in Steyr for 2024, whereby production is progressing in several phases. Around 500 million euros have already been invested in new systems and machines, such as [electric car-news.net] (https://www.elektroauto-news.net/news/bmw-hochlauf-eauto drives) reported.

The conversion to e-drive production comprises two special production lines. The first line that went into the pre -series operation in autumn 2024 is intended for electricity -enclosed synchronous machines (SSM), which are used for both rear -wheel drive and all -wheel drive. Series production is scheduled to begin at the end of August 2025. The second production line will produce high -quality permanently excited synchronous machines (PSM), the test phase of which starts in autumn 2025. An annual production volume of 600,000 e-drives is planned for 2024, with 200,000 SSM and 400,000 PSM.

A strategic location for e-drive production

The Steyr location will not only play an important role as a production facility for electrical drives, but will also deliver central components for the new BMW "class" from autumn 2025. In addition to the current renovation measures, a new assembly hall for e-drive production is also set up and existing buildings are revitalized. Pre -series productions of rotors, stators, housings, inverters and driven started in July. Over 150 new machines and plants are currently being built up, which the future plans of BMW underleit, such as [e-stesteyr.com] (https://www.e-steyr.com/steyr-news/wirtschaft-und-pau-der-er- draft production-bmw-steyr-schen-zig-voran) notes.

The plant manager Klaus von Moltke emphasizes that the combination of development and production at the same location brings strategic advantages. Despite initial uncertainties in the workforce, long -term perspectives have already been created. The planned proportion of e-drive production on the global BMW sales could be almost 25% in 2024, with a planned sales of around 2.45 million vehicles. In 2024, the proportion of fully electric BMW models was around 17% and is expected to continue to rise in 2025.

The challenges of e-mobility

Transformation to e-mobility not only poses BMW, but the entire European automotive industry with great challenges. According to a study by McKinsey, the added value in the industry could change significantly by 2035. The current gross value added is $ 1,900 billion, with around 60% of this value creation coming from vehicle production, suppliers and trade. If the European manufacturers not only give up their market share of 60%, but also lose localized battery value, could be lost up to $ 400 billion, such as mcKinsey.com warns.

BMW must therefore be flexibly adapted to the respective market demand and plans to keep the number of employees in Steyr stable at just under 4,900, of which around 700 are involved in development. The challenges are great, but BMW has proven a good hand to successfully position not only technology but also market shares in e-mobility.
