Upper Austria's vineyard: The best wines 2025 awarded!
A glass full of surprises! The best wines in the country were recently chosen at the wine gala "Best of Oö" in Linz. The event now took place for the second time after 2023 and attracted 158 wines from 23 winegrowers in 13 categories. It is remarkable that the number of submissions has increased by 42 percent compared to the previous year. This development not only reflects the increasing popularity of Upper Austrian wines, but also shows a clear upward trend in home viticulture.
agricultural councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger emphasizes the passion and pioneering spirit of the winegrowers in the region. "It is impressive to see how the winemakers in Upper Austria break new ground and develop their products," she said during the gala. There are currently around 100 hectares of vineyards in Upper Austria, with a clear tendency. The green Veltliner plays a central role with a share of 12 hectares, while 35 hectares are used for red wine on 65 hectares of white wine surfaces.
top wines and winners
In a blind tasting, a 12-member jury rated the wines according to a 20-point scheme. The experts, including Sommeliers from Gault & Millau, were able to discover some outstanding wines. Among the winners, the slate out of Kematen stands out from Kematen on the Krems, which triumphed in three categories - Green Veltliner (2023), Rosé (2024 Lucky Rosé) and Süßwein (2023 Solaris sweet wine).
also the Nußböckgut, represented by the Velechovsky family from Leonding, was able to score with the Chardonnay Classic 2024 in the Burgundy varieties category. In another category, the Gaumberg Gut from Leonding was honored for its Riesling 2022 in the Weißwein division. The Hofweinut Schmuckenschlager from Enns celebrated another success, which ran to the top with Zweigelt 2023 in the Rotwein category.
variety and quality
Another highlight are the fruit finishing siblings Wurm from St. Florian, which received an award for her Donauriesling in 2023. The Linz-Landbetriebe achieved many final placements in the different categories, which underlines the high quality of the wines from the region. Slate mair wine was also shown in the top positions in the categories frizzante, sparkling wine, variety of varieties and in the section of the mature white wines.
The wine winners are consistently represented with their products in top gastronomy, which underpins the increasing recognition of the Upper Austrian wines. Climatic changes also seem to be beneficial for viticulture, since the conditions for growing the grapes are getting better. For consumers who pay attention to the variety and high qualities of the 70 different grape varieties in this region, it means: on the glasses, ready, go!
