Exclusive organ tour: Celebrate Bruckner's 201st birthday!
A very special occasion is just around the corner! September 4, 2025 marks the 201st anniversary of Joseph Anton Bruckner's birth, and the Steyr City Museum has organized an exclusive event to mark this celebratory occasion. During a tour of the impressive Chrismann organ in the Steyr parish church, you can look forward to exciting insights and musical impressions. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and promises not only a deeper connection to Bruckner, but also a journey into the world of organ music.
The event is entitled “Museum Exclusive” and will be led by Kurt Apfelthaler, a well-known organ builder. As a Bruckner fan, Apfelthaler will take participants on an informative journey about the structure and functionality of the historic organ. There will be the opportunity to view the instrument up close and be carried away by the fascination of organ music. The tour lasts 90 minutes and takes guests through not only the history of the organ, but also Bruckner's own connection to this masterpiece.
Bruckner's legacy in Steyr
Joseph Anton Bruckner was born on September 4, 1824 in Ansfelden, Upper Austria. His life was shaped by his passion for music and his career as an organist. Even at a young age he worked as a temporary organist and later played on Franz Xaver Chrismann's organ in Steyr. This happened during his time as a teaching assistant and subsequently as a consultant during the organ renovation in the 1890s. Bruckner gave numerous concerts, masses and private organ improvisations in the city parish church, which have left a legacy to this day.
The parish church in Steyr is not only an impressive historical place, but also the perfect setting for this event. The walk from the city museum to the church is a short walk of around two minutes along the parish stairs, although sure-footedness is required. Those interested can register at info@stadtmuseum-steyr.at necessary because the number of participants is limited. The participation fee is 14 euros, reduced 12 euros.
