Contemporary witnesses from Ried: personal reports about the end of the war!

Ried im Innkreis, Österreich - In Ried, the story comes alive! At the high school, Monika and Hermann Schueler reported from their own memories of the end of the Second World War. Although both were small children at the time of the war, they had a lot to tell. They illuminated how the post -war period shaped the life of their families and what challenges they had to master at the time. The enthusiasm among the students was noticeable; They asked numerous questions and exchanged the stories of their major and great-grandparents. The event stretched over two hours and offered a deep insight into a time that is foreign for many in today's generation, but still has an impact.

memories from first hand

The stories of Monika and Hermann Schueler are not only personal reviews, but also part of a larger collective memory. Her stories shed light on how children grew up in the turmoil of the war and what fears and hopes of them and their families accompanied them. This type of history lesson is becoming increasingly important, because the direct contemporary witnesses are less and it is crucial to capture their experiences.

In addition to the individual memories, there are the fates of other contemporary witnesses that have told about the brutal circumstances where the war developed. A narrator reports on his capture by so -called chain dogs (field gods) in Passau. On May 1, 1945, he was part of a group of young warriors who were supposed to work for Heinrich Himmler's underground organization. In fact, the group experienced dramatic moments, such as the news about Adolf Hitler's death. At a farm they learned that the situation could change suddenly.

The turbulent post -war period

The challenges of the post -war period remained not only for adults, but also for those who come. The contemporary witnesses report that the Americans soon marched into the Ostmark with tanks and occupied Braunau, Hitler's place of birth. These events were not only formative for the region, but also for the personal development of many young people. The bridge to Simbach was blown up, which meant that many were looking for new ways of life and had to rebuild the country.

The event at the Ried high school enabled the students to deal with the past and actively reflect on the legacy of history. The stories of Monika and Hermann Schueler represent an indispensable part of historical education and show that the understanding of our history is essential to shape the present and future. A big thank you to all contemporary witnesses that share their stories with us!
