Traffic calming on Altenberger Straße: Work start in summer!
Altenberger Straße in Linz is facing a comprehensive redesign that is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2023. Above all, the project aims to calm traffic in this area. As part of a municipal council, the political parties, including the Greens and the SPÖ, decided in April 2023, discussed concrete measures for traffic calming and a traffic concept for the Auhof district. Vice Mayor Martin Hajart confirmed that there are concrete plans and the implementation is imminent, as tips.at reports.
A central element of this project is the new A7 connection that is realized between B125 Prager Straße and Altenberger Straße. This "half-connection point" will make it possible to only drive up and down towards Linz. Commuters from the Mühlviertel are better to be managed around Altenberger Straße, which is particularly important for relieving the Auhof district. Forecasts show that without the connection by 2030, daily traffic power of around 26,800 vehicles can be expected, as the Land Oberösterreich
planned measures for traffic calming
The planned measures for the redesign of Altenberger Straße include various elements that aim to increase the quality of stay and reduce traffic. These include a gatekeeper in the area of the university, green islands and lane narrowing. It is particularly important to contain the throughput traffic and to make the street space functional and appealing.
The Aubrunnerweg, the Winkler Markt crossing, the Schumpeterstraße stop and Leopold-Figl-Straße include. The ultimate goal of these redesign measures is not only to reduce the traffic load, but also to upgrade the street space through crossing aids and greening elements, such as Tips.at further executed.
a look into the past
traffic calming is not a new topic. As early as the 1970s, the desire for less traffic noise and more quality of life arose. In Austria, as in many other European cities, the goal was to make the street space usable as a habitat and not only leave traffic. Commitment in the areas of research and planning has shown that well -considered measures can significantly increase the quality of living in urban areas, such as the Research information system Constantant.
The sure is: The redesign of Altenberger Straße will not only reduce traffic loads, but also help to make the Linzers feel more comfortable in their Auhof district inside. The work should start during the summer vacation and are expected to be completed by the beginning of the winter semester 2023.
