Austria meets Japan: A culinary experiment full of surprises!

Austria meets Japan: A culinary experiment full of surprises!
Linz, Österreich - How does it come about that a culinary bridge is beaten from Japan and Austria? Quite simply, through an exciting cooperation that should not only cook the cooking, but also the cultural understanding of both countries. A high school from Nasushiobara has been looking for contact with the HBLA Elmberg in Linz to reinterpret Austrian dishes with regional Japanese ingredients. The starting signal for this creative project is in spring 2024.
What is the focus on? On the domestic products of the tochigi region, such as strawberries, milk and vegetables. These should play a central role in the recipes. Students of the HBLA Elmberg look forward to actively participating in the project with their ideas and tips, including the production of Germeig.
culinary surprises
The collaboration is supported by regular online meetings via zoom. This is primarily possible thanks to Ms. Miyoshi, who acts as a translator and brings both languages fluently. The practical exercise units have already started in which the recipes for food technology and product development are tried and tasted. Some unexpected taste experiences came to light: a sweet meat filling in dumplings, seasoned with sugar and bays with a spicy mushroom filling. The Linz eyes, which are filled with a spicy cheese cream, also provided many astonished faces.
The creations that emerged from the collaboration are presented in the Spring Festival 2025 in Nasushiobara. The presentation of Austrian music and a selection of dishes that show the creative potential of this culinary merger is accompanied
an exchange of cultures
What is special about this exchange? The possibility for the students to bring their ideas and at the same time gain insight into a completely different culture and their eating habits is a great asset. In cooperation, it also becomes clear how exciting and diverse the fusion cuisine is, which combines traditional Japanese recipes with innovative elements and creates new taste experiences. The dynamics between cultures and the creative interpretations invite you to look outside the box.
The future of this project looks promising. Through the positive experiences, the participants hope for a continuation of the cooperation and that they will soon be able to conjure up further culinary highlights from the combination of Austrian and Japanese cuisine. In conclusion, it is to be hoped that such intercultural projects will continue to be promoted. Because they show that through common passion and creativity you can not only combine the palate, but also the hearts of people.
