Anniversary exhibition: Experience the history of the Zinkenbach painter colony up close!

Zinkenbach, Österreich - in St. Gilgen will celebrate a very special anniversary from June 14 to October 12, 2025: the Exhibition in the Museum of the Zinkenbach painting colony . On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the museum, art lovers can look forward to an exciting review that illuminates the painting colony in the social and political environment from 1918 to 1938-a time that was not only shaped by dynamic currents in the visual art, but also by profound political upheavals.

The exhibition opens its doors every day from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and shows works that come from the time of the monarchy and the interwar period. Among the artists presented: Inside are well-known names such as Alfred Gerstenbrand, Oskar Laske, Bettina Bauer-Ehrlich, and Gertrude Schwarz-Helberger. The focus is particularly on the art flow "New Objectivity", which impressively reflects the attitude to life and social upheavals at the time.

The importance of the painting colony

The Zinkenbach painting colony, which has its origin in the idyllic Zinkenbach (today Abersee) on Lake Wolfgang, was a loose group of Austrian artists who invited to joint meetings from 1927. The group's central head was Ferdinand Kitt. According to the research of wikipedia there were diverse political views in this artist community that reached from extreme left to the extreme right - including both National Socialist and communist.

Against the background of the connection to Austria to National Socialist Germany in 1938, many Jewish members were forced to leave the country, which led to the final dissolution of the colony. However, some artists, as Ernst August von Mandelsloh and Gudrun Baudisch, were able to make a career during this dark time while others fled to the USA.

The exhibition is not only enriched by impressive paintings, but also by a short film entitled "Hell" by Rein Raamat, which impressively captures the atmosphere of the interwar period. The curator of the exhibition, Mag. Peter Rieder, will take the visitors: take an informing journey through the art and the stories of the time. The epilogue works of art by Gudrun Baudisch and Sergius Pausers are particularly noteworthy.

For this renowned exhibition, works from the in -house collection as well as loan from museums and private collectors are used, which underlines the width and variety of works of art shown.
