Corpus Christi procession 2025: Tradition and festivity at Lake Hallstatt!
Hallstatt, Österreich - The tradition is very important in Hallstatt. On Thursday, June 19, the Corpus Christi procession will take place again, a festive event that has been carried out as a lake procession since 1623. This year, those present experience a special ceremony that is deeply rooted in the history of the region. The festival of the holiest body and blood of Christ, popularly known as Corpus Christi, has its roots back to 1246 when it was celebrated for the first time in the diocese of Liège, and goes back to a vision of St. Juliana von Liège in 1209, like Salzkammergut-rundblick.at reported.
The tradition of the lake procession was launched on land due to lack of space. The legendary "Mutzen" are used, large wooden tin that are rowed by hand. These unique boats are decorated with a triumphal arch and garlands and carry a baroque monstrance decorated with gemstones as a "sacrament ship". The church choir provides the musical accompaniment with typical Corpus Christi songs, while the Corpus Christi shooters announce the festival day at 6 a.m. with shots. The festive day begins with a high office in the Catholic Church at 9 a.m., followed by a prayer at the 1st altar on the market square at 10:15 a.m.
The festive drain
At 10:30 a.m. the actual lake procession begins, which is led by the salt music band. The procession leads over various blessing stations - at the market square, on the Hallstättersee and finally back. The children sprinkle flowers and give the festive train a special charm. The first blessing station takes place on the market square, followed by a second stop on the lake and other stations in the middle of Lake Hallstatt, which is known as a salt mountain station, and near the shore. At around 12 noon, the procession ends with a solemn Te Deum and the final blessing。
almost two years after the big 400th anniversary of the Corpus Christi procession 2023, when diocesan bishop Manfred Scheuer and Governor Thomas Stelzer took part, this old tradition will be tied again. This is not just a religious event, but a social highlight for the entire community, which attracts numerous visitors and celebrates the connection to the culture and history of Hallstatt. Everyone is cordially invited to take part in this special day and celebrate together what makes our traditions strong.
Corpus Christi Understand
The festival itself is a deep spiritual experience. Jesus becomes a living bread for the believers as part of the Eucharist, which has come from heaven. He himself says: "Whoever eats this bread will live forever." These words are central to the understanding of the Corpus Christi festival and illustrate the importance of the holy body in Catholic teaching. It is these deep beliefs that still give consolation and hope today, as is on katholisch.at. So they prepare for a wonderful festival that not only has a religious character, but also promotes the coexistence of the community. In Hallstatt, the Corpus Christi 2025 will become an unforgettable experience again.
