Wiener Neustadt meets for more accessibility for everyone!

The city of Wiener Neustadt has started with an Initiative to improve accessibility. The focus is on the further development and guarantee of accessibility for all residents. This reports [wn24.at] (https://www.wn24.at/politik/wiener-neustadt- Ketzenbungen-zum-thema barrier-free-60465.html) and emphasizes that this initiative is under the direction of the Social City Council Lab. Philipp Gerstenmayer.

On May 26, a kick-off meeting took place in the Otto Sommer Hall of the volunteer fire brigade, in which representatives of disabled organizations such as Öziv, the deaf association and U Are Special were present. An important aspect of the initiative is the more intensive exchange with those affected in order to better understand their needs and incorporate them into the planning. Accessibility is considered a basic prerequisite for social participation, with the aim of positioning Wiener Neustadt as a "city for life" for all population groups.

New location of the participation

A new day care center for people with disabilities was also opened in Wiener Neustadt in parallel to the initiative for accessibility. Among other things, the social state councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister as well as Vice Mayor Alois Hahn and managing director Peter Hecht included present. This facility is part of an extensive network in Lower Austria that invests around 240 million euros annually in the funding and care of people with disabilities. As a result, around 4,500 people are accommodated in day care facilities and 2,800 people in supervised forms of living, according to the information from noe.gv.at.

The new day care center of I: Lower Austria Leben GmbH has 26 places, of which 24 are considered Lower Austria. Your job offer includes a kitchen, creative groups, a textile group and a knowledge workshop. The focus is on social integration and the promotion of the skills of the participants. Thanks go to the committed employees who do valuable work every day.

accessibility as a social challenge

However,

accessibility is more than just structural measures, such as the installation of wheelchair ramps. According to the [Ministry of Social Affairs] (https://www.social Ministry.gv.at/themen/sociales/menschen-mit-bäffreit.html), it includes access to a variety of areas of life, from information systems to transport to communication means. A lack of accessibility limits the participation of people with disabilities.

The Federal Disability Equality Act (BGStG), which has been in force since January 1, 2006, aims to promote equal participation of people with disabilities in society. Public buildings and events must also be accessible to accessible to the participation. In addition, public websites are designed in accordance with the current EU guidelines.

The demographic change and the steadily increasing number of older people in society emphasize the need to reduce barriers. A barrier -free environment not only supports individual independence, but also the opportunity to stay in the usual environment and to live a self -determined life. The current initiative in Wiener Neustadt thus contributes decisively to the promotion of inclusion and equality of all citizens.
