Protest against Strabag: Eastern bypass threatens nature and habitat!

In Wiener Neustadt there was a striking protest scenario today: Environmental activist: Inside, in front of the Strabag office, in order to demonstrate against the controversial construction work on the eastern bypass. The situation is increasingly tense, because the criticism not only is directed against the concrete construction activities, but also outlines a bigger problem that many in the region employ.

The protesters loudly expressed their concerns about the millions of orders to road construction groups, while ÖBB also has to deal with savings of 900 million euros in expanding the rail network. Irene Nemeth from the 'Vernunft-Statt-concrete' initiative in particular made it clear that Strabag propagates climate protection, but at the same time builds new roads, which no longer seems up to date in the current climate crisis. This contradiction caused plenty of conversation among those present.

economic priorities targeted

Another criticism came from Christine Nenning, who denounced the economic priorities of the federal and state governments. Their demand is clear: the construction of the eastern bypass must be stopped so as not to destroy a nature reserve and overbid valuable fields. "In times of savings, we have to demand a responsible handling of public funds," says Nenning.

The concerns of the protesters are in the field of tension between the needs of the infrastructure and the protection of the environment. Strabag not only sees itself as a construction company, but as an active co -designer for sustainable development. "The construction industry contributes significantly to the global greenhouse gas emissions," said the management, which is why a clear sustainability strategy has been developed. This strategy aims to decarbonize the entire value chain by 2040. "Sustainability is not just a keyword, but a responsibility that we have to take as a leading construction technology group," says the company website of Strabag.

challenges in the construction industry

But how is the construction industry doing in this difficult time? Two central roles of the construction companies are contractors and employers. This role brings a variety of challenges, from weather -related delays to labor law obligations. Companies are obliged to ensure the security of their employees and have to decide whether they continue to work in rough conditions or stop working.

A problematic topic that often falls under the table is protection against UV rays. Despite the existing limit values, this aspect is often neglected because the awareness of this is poor. A rethinking in the industry is urgently needed so that both the environment and the employees do not fall by the wayside.

In summary, it seems that there is a deep area of tension in the current projects by Strabag and similar companies: on the one hand the urge for development and progress, on the other hand, the gradual loss of nature and quality of life. The question remains how long such a consideration can go without the concerns of the protesting hearing.
