investments in the cycling infrastructure
Despite the pleasing developments in bike tourism, the challenges must not be forgotten. Lower Austria has to catch up with considerable failures in recent decades. According to a current study, an investment requirement of 1.7 billion euros is forecast for cycling in the country in order to create structurally separate bike paths and other necessary infrastructure. Around 850 km of such paths are currently missing. The total requirement for cycling in Austria is even up to 7 billion euros.

The state government also sees positive approaches: for 2023, more than 20 million euros are planned for the cycling infrastructure. The support programs for municipalities that cover between 60-80 % of the costs for cycling infrastructures are intended to create additional incentives. Long -term plans, such as the development of cycling roads between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt, are already in progress.
Today's press conference clearly shows that Lower Austria is on the right track to position itself as a leading goal for cycling, while at the same time the framework conditions for cycling are continuously improved. That makes it clear: there are still many exciting developments to be expected here!
