Historical step: Kampwald National Park In Lower Austria slowly takes shape!
Schloss Waldreichs, 3910 Zwettl, Österreich - The foundation of the Kampwald National Park in Lower Austria takes on forms. On May 30, 2025, the first meeting of the person's committee took place at Waldeich Castle. Governor Deputy Stephan Pernkopf and State Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko emphasized the importance of the project for the future of the region. The planned national park will be the third in Lower Austria and the seventh all over Austria. The area of the planned national park belongs to the Windhag scholarship foundation, which also includes the Ottenstein Gut.
The main goal of the national park will be the preservation of nature and the increase in added value in the region. The members of the person's committee are made up of regional personalities from the areas of tourism, research, politics, business and nature conservation. You will act as multipliers and actively support the project. The importance of the national park is also underlined by financial support of seven million euros from the federal biodiversity fund, which was recently decided for the "Dobratal" nature reserve.
biodiversity and climate protection
The Dobratal nature reserve comprises around 270 hectares and is an essential area in the context of realizing the national park. It is to be implemented by the end of 2026 or early 2027, with mapping and management plans. The aim is to develop natural forest societies and various FFH habitats such as the "Waldmeister-Buchenwald" and "floodplain forests". Measures to preserve biodiversity, such as the removal of non -location trees and the restoration of natural water areas, are also planned.
The "Dobratal" project plays a crucial role, especially since the northern Kamptal offers extraordinary natural qualities. In the sense of climate protection, the promotion of climate tales is used here by nature rejuvenation. The areas of the Ottenstein estate are of central importance in this development. The use of the outer use of these areas will stop forestry use as well as economic hunting and fishing and promote the natural development of the forests and wetlands.
role of the national parks
National Parks are of outstanding importance in climate protection and for the preservation of biological diversity. They not only serve as a retreat for numerous animal and plant species, but also as carbon sinks that bind large amounts of CO₂. In Austria, the Kampwald National Park will help promote ecological resilience and to facilitate the adjustment process to climate change. In addition, the protected areas are important places for research and ecological education where visitors can be sensitized to environmental issues.
However, there are also challenges such as climate change, invasive types and increasing number of visitors. In order to meet these challenges, joint efforts by governments, NGOs, scientists and the public are required. The Kampwald National Park and the adjacent Dobratal nature reserve represent a significant step in this direction and show the commitment to the protection of nature and regional values.
