Married couple in the mountains: Ms. falls and emergency services must be deployed

in the Steyr-Land, Austria district, an incident occurred on May 31, 2025, which again raises awareness of security when hiking. A 53-year-old couple from Amstetten had gone on a hike to the large Almkogel, which is a proud 1,513 meters high. Around 12 p.m. they started their tour on the 492 hiking trail, which leads from Brunnbacheck to the Ennserhütte. Unfortunately, there was an accident during the relegation when the woman fell through carelessness at a height of 1,350 meters.

In this predicament, the woman dragged on the right wrist. Despite the injury, the couple continued the descent to the Ennershütte, where they finally alerted the mountain rescue. The emergency services of the Steyr/Losenstein mountain rescue were quickly on hand and provided first aid. The injured woman was then transported to the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Clinic Steyr for outpatient treatment, where she received the necessary medical care. Such incidents are not uncommon, such as 5min.at.

Mountain accidents at the record level

The case of the couple falls during a time when the mountain accident statistics have alarming numbers. In 2022, the German Alpine Association (DAV), with 1,243 affected members, has recorded the highest number of accidents since the start of the surveys. This corresponds to an accident rate from an incident to 1,128 members, which shows that the risk of mountain sports remains real. While the number of fatal accidents among DAV members with 35 deaths remains at a low level, the numbers are still worrying. For example, the proportion of accidents caused by stone and ice cream rose to 9%, sometimes due to climate change, which increases the risk of such events. According to the Alpenverein, the number of accidents when hiking in 2022 with 384 cases and 17 deaths is also significant.

Another alarming pattern shows itself through slipping on (old) snow fields, which was increasingly moved to the months of March and April. This phenomenon presents hikers with new challenges, especially in the transition period between the seasons. It is therefore particularly important to keep an eye on your own skills and the weather and, if in doubt

a rapidly growing need for mountain rescue

The recent incidents call the need for professional mountain rescue. The mountain rescues are dependent on well -trained staff in order to be able to react quickly and effectively to emergencies. It is not only the technical equipment, but also the knowledge of the emergency services in order to make the right decision in difficult situations. The current events emphasize the importance of safe behavior in the mountains and the cooperation with the experts in mountain rescue.

As the experiences of the couple from Amstetten show, a mountain tour is not only an adventure, but can also quickly become a challenge. It is worth paying attention to your own security and in an emergency to use the experts. Nature is not always from its gentle side, and caution is better than forbearance.
