Völkermarkt: Every Saturday, dawdle for the city center's revitalization!

From September 13th there will be a new weekly flea market in Völkermarkt, which will take place every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main square. The initiative comes from the Zukunft Völkermarkt business association, and the two main protagonists of this idea are managing director Julia Koller and Markus Silan. Silan has over ten years of experience with flea markets and already manages a flea market in Klagenfurt with around 100 stalls and another in Villach with 40 to 50 stalls.

There is already great interest in taking part in the flea market. Many local businesses have tried to set up a stand in order to take advantage of the opportunity to present their products and services to the general public. The exact size of the stands that will be set up in Völkermarkt has not yet been determined, but registrations have already been opened.

Attraction point for visitors

Mayor Markus Lakounigg from the SPÖ also believes that the Völkermarkt main square is the ideal place for this door opener to revitalize the city center. “A flea market not only brings a breath of fresh air into the city, but could also attract new visitors,” says Lakounigg. There are currently eight empty commercial spaces around the main square, and the flea market could bring more people here again.

The trade association's data analysis, based on mobile phone data, shows that more than 3,000 visitors flock to the city for the weekly market. This could give a flea market a big boost, not only providing an opportunity to pick up bargains but also becoming a meeting place for the community.

If necessary, the flea market could be expanded into the Bürgerlustpark, which would offer additional opportunities for dealers and visitors. The atmosphere of a flea market can already be successfully experienced in Klagenfurt, and Völkermarkt has the chance to pick up on this trend and establish itself as a new destination for bargain hunters.

It remains to be seen how the market will develop and how many visitors will take advantage of the new offer. Together with the commitment of local businesses, this could be a real benefit for the city.
