Vehicle fire in the Völkermarkt: L133 closed after total damage!

Völkermarkt, Österreich - on June 3, 2025, around 3:00 p.m., the police were alerted after a vehicle fire in the Völkermarkt district broke out. The cause of the fire is currently still unknown. The vehicle was in full fire within a very short time, which ultimately led to total damage. So far, specific damage heights have not been quantified. During the extinguishing work, the L133 had to be blocked for all traffic, which led to traffic disruptions. Police inspections from Bleiburg and Griffen as well as several volunteers were deployed: Bleiburg, Loibach, Feistritz OB Bleiburg, St. Michael ob Bleiburg and Replach, who actively take care of fire fighting, such as [daili.at] (https://daili.at/2025/06/totalschafschafschafen-ach-bahrband-l133-l133-time-style reported.

In the event of incidents like this, the safety of vehicles is often discussed. The debate about electric cars is particularly interesting. According to a statistics of the GDV from 2023, a total of 14,200 comprehensive cars burned in Germany, with both combustion and electric cars into account. The car insurers paid over 100 million euros for vehicle fires, which illustrates the entirety of the high costs. The average damage to a vehicle fire is around 7,100 euros. Statistically, however, the fire risk of e-cars is no higher than that of conventional vehicles, such as gdv.de.

special challenges for electric cars

A fire in an electric vehicle can differ from other fire scenarios. It becomes particularly delicate when the drive battery is affected. A so -called thermal runaway can occur here, which leads to overheating and potential chain reactions that are hard to extinguish. Such fires are a special challenge for the fire brigade, since they need special fire fighting strategies to safely delete burning batteries. In underground garages in particular, the risk should not be underestimated due to high temperatures and flue gas emissions.

The fire brigade has adapted to these new challenges and continuously adapts its methods. In addition to classic fire fighting, special extinguishing containers can be used in many cases to flood the electric vehicle and cool the battery.

The subject of vehicle fires does not only affect the current incident in Völkermarkt. In the past, too, there have been similar incidents on the South Autobahn, as a report by meinzirk.at. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the time, which shows how important rapid action of the emergency services is to prevent worse consequences.
