The water resources of Villach

water is a precious asset in Austria. Around 80 % of the drinking water in Villach comes from the Dobratsch karststock, while 20 % come from the territory field. The Union and Thomasquelle deliver impressive 400 liters of water per second, as reported. In addition, there are around 94 hectares of water protection areas in the city that have to be carefully monitored to secure the high water quality.

An outstanding point are the daily fluctuations in consumption, which are compensated for by 14 elevated tanks with total storage capacity of over 24 million liters. On average, the daily water requirement is around 15 million liters, which underlines how important a well -functioning infrastructure is. In addition to the regular water examination, mobile emergency generators are in use in order to be able to maintain the drinking water supply even in the event of power outages.
