Spittal is blooming: third gold medal at the Carinthian Flower Olympics!
Spittal an der Drau can once again look forward to a great success: the city has won the Carinthian Flower Olympics for the third time in a row. Mayor Gerhard Köfer emphasizes how well Spittal's floral splendor is known beyond the borders of Carinthia. Every year the city is transformed into a colorful floral magic that attracts not only locals but also numerous visitors to enjoy the special ambience. At the beginning of the season, the mayor and city gardener Daniel Santner coordinate the planting and decide on the selection of flower types and their design.
Around 40,000 spring and summer flowers are grown in the municipal nursery and planted throughout the city. Biodiversity and species diversity are particularly important to the city, particularly in connection with the protection of bees and other insects. With a focus on sustainability, the city processes the leftover grass and shrub cuttings into compost, thereby conserving resources and saving costs.
Biodiversity in the city garden
An impressive example of the commitment to nature in Spittal is Julia Santner's garden. With attention to detail, she has created a green oasis that not only impresses with lavender, roses and hydrangeas, but also attracts numerous insects and birds. Santner says her garden started ten years ago with a few small trees and has developed splendidly since then. Her garden now also includes a wooden terrace, decorative elements and a hammock for relaxing hours.
Encouraged by the success of her participation in the Flower Olympics in the “Garden as a Recreational Space” category, she advises other garden lovers to also take part in the competitions. The support of the jury helped her a lot. Your experiences clearly show how important it is to start with easy-care plants and, if necessary, to consult specialists.
Green gold for the city
The successes at the Flower Olympics demonstrate the commitment of the city's gardeners; the large number of flowering plants and well-kept grounds not only contribute to the joy of life of the residents, but also create an inviting ambience for tourists. Well-maintained public facilities promote lingering and thus the quality of life in the city.
In this respect, the city's closed natural cycle is of essential importance. The regular inspection of the trees in the municipal area also shows the responsibility that the city bears for its nature. When felling for safety reasons, care is always taken to plant three new trees in order to sustainably revitalize the urban area.
Spittal continues to grow and thrive as a blooming paradise that is not only a feast for the eyes of visitors, but can also serve as an example of sustainable urban development. With a strong focus on biodiversity and responsible stewardship of nature, the city remains a pioneer in urban horticulture.
