Beat against illegal waste transports: millions of fines on Carinthia's highways!
On the Carinthian motorways A2 and A11, things were recently very important for the topic of waste. From June 2 to 4, 2025, intensive controls were carried out, which should show how the illegal waste transports and the transport of dangerous goods were carried out. The starting basis of this comprehensive campaign was the waste management law on which the authorities involved, such as the State Transport Office Carinthia, agreed to the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, the Federal Environment Agency and customs. Checked both on the A2 near Arnoldstein and on the A11 Karawankenautobahn, especially in the area of the border control points, such as [daili] (https://daili.at/2025/06/schwerpunkt-auf-a2-und-a1-llegale- Abuseschriftung/)
The results of the campaign were remarkable. In total, 32 controls were carried out as part of the Waste Management Act. 2 ads and 5 organ mandate sentences were imposed. The focus was also on dangerous goods transport: 21 checks according to the ADR (action to regulate the dangerous goods) were carried out, including 16 ads and 3 penalties according to the ADR/GGBG (law on international transportation of dangerous goods on streets). In addition, 64 EGVO controls (Ordinance on the Removal of Waste) were added, which led to 92 advertisements and 25 penalties due to violations according to social regulations, as reported by the portal [5min] (https://www.5min.at/5202506051209/illegale-polporte-polport-preft-auf-kaerntner-autobahnen-
clear need for action
The authorities have strict regulations. According to the Waste Driving Act, the federal states are obliged to check both sample -like transports as well as systems and companies. The participation of the customs authorities plays an important role in preventing illegal activities, such as the [Federal Environment Agency] (https://www.umweltbundamt.de/themen/abfall-dall-destourcen/grenzueberschreit-fahrrit-fahrrung/verlung-der-illegalen- waste delivery) explained. In the case of illegal waste transitions, punishments up to 15 years of imprisonment or sensitive fines can be imposed, which underlines the seriousness of the situation.
But that's not all: the inspectors also recorded 109 advertisements due to technical defects in the vehicles, 4 advertisements due to defective load securing and another 9 advertisements according to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) and the Driving Personnel Act (FSG). Finally, 4 license plates had to be removed and 26 continuing proceeds had to be pronounced. The income from the measures amounts to several ten thousand euros in security payments and several thousand euros in organ mandates - a strong sign that there is a need for action.
The almost 25-person inspecting team impressively shows how serious the authorities take illegal waste. It remains to be seen whether these measures can also show long -term success and push the illegal practices back.
