The economic structure of Reisseck has changed a lot in recent years. Today the municipality is energetically independent, thanks to the four power plants that are operated there. Compared to earlier, as inns and even their own brewery shaped the picture, social life has decreased significantly today. "In the past we had more leisure and community life, including midday naps under the ash," recalls Peter, who also appeals to the nostalgic home evenings and the many festivals that existed at the time. Today, on the other hand, there are only three big festivals a year.

Another change is shown in the interests of the younger generation, which is increasingly moving to Mühldorf, while the older people often come together in the remaining inns. The dwindling interest in events and festivals poses major challenges for the organizers. "It's not easy to activate people," says Peter Kleinfercher.

Despite these challenges, Peter is optimistic about the EU. "The advantages of the free borders and the euro are noticeable," he explains. Manuel Göritzer agrees and mentions the support that the municipality has received from the EU, even if the preservation of funding is often associated with elaborate procedures. "Sometimes it's a real wire rope act," says Manuel.

The positive aspects of the EU, which are also addressed by the two interlocutors, go beyond the borders of Reisseck. The EU expansion has played a decisive role in stability, peace and wealth in Europe. It not only offers political stability, but also access to the internal market, which promotes trade and thus also boosts the economy. The Copenhagen criteria that have to meet new Member States are clearly defined and promote stable institutions and a functioning market economy.

Overall, the EU has often accepted new members since its foundation - from Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom in 1973 to Croatia in 2013. There are currently numerous candidate countries who hope for membership, including Albania and Moldova.
