Truck accident on Großglocknerstraße: Driver is spared lightly!

This day, June 5, 2025, there was a curious traffic accident on Großglockner Straße B107, which kept the fire brigade busy. A truck that probably plunged into the ditch due to tumultuous oncoming traffic and the confines of the street caused excitement in the region. The incident was reported by the Mörtschach fire brigade, which was called to the site at lunchtime. The fire department's concern was clear: to carry out street cleaning, traffic regulation and the necessary road closure in order to ensure the safety of road users.

One of the biggest challenges was the narrow street. The truck had apparently reached the banquet too far to the right, which led to the serious fall when passing a larger vehicle. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed and was able to free himself from the vehicle.

The rescue of the accident truck was then carried out by a towing company. The volunteer fire brigades from Winklern, Reintal, Mörtschach and Großkirchheim, which reacted quickly and efficiently. But as so often with such accidents, the question remains how general traffic safety is on Austria's streets.

The accident figures make thoughtful. According to BGL EV, a total of 600 people were fatally injured in accidents in accidents with freight mobile vehicles, which was 13 less than in the previous year. The proportion of people killed in truck accidents dropped from 23.9% to 21.5%. It turns out that traffic safety is making progress, even if every accident has serious consequences.

The on-site emergency services can look back concerned: there has been an increase in fatalities in truck accidents in recent years, especially in 2021 and 2022. Nevertheless, the trend of the past years is sobering. Compared to the first statistical recording of accidents in Germany in 1992, the number of fatally injured truck inmates fell by 42.8%.
