Cooler May 2025: Austria's weather compared to two years before!
What happened in Austrian weather events in the past few weeks? May 2025 turned out to be much cooler than usual. According to [uwz.at] (https://uwz.at/de/a/mai2025-kuehler-als- and-wenig-sun), the temperature deviation was compared to the long-term agent (1991-2020) -1.2 degrees. The deviations in the Mühl and Waldviertel as well as in the Middle Burgenland, where the temperatures were up to 2 degrees below the cut were particularly pronounced. In contrast, the deviations in the west and south of the country remained more moderate. The temperatures were rarely over 25 degrees, but on the last day of the month a real temperature highlight was reached with 31.8 degrees in Innsbruck.
Weather technology remained shaped by a constant change between cold air burglars and occasional summer phases. The last frost occurred on the night of May 10th on the Vienna outskirts and caused temperatures below -5 degrees in typical lowering of the forest and mill district. If you look at the rainfall, there are large regional differences: While in the Bregenzerwald as well as in the Nockbergen and Schladminger Tauern +30 to +95% more rain fell, areas in the west of Upper Austria and in the forest and Weinviertel were too dry in the forest and Weinviertel.
weather extreme in May
The extreme weather events were particularly striking: In Graz, Laa/Thaya and Mattsee, there were only around 50% of the usual amount of rain, while the Northern Alps often listed up to 30% few hours of sunshine. According to Statista, the sunshine duration throughout the country was almost 20% below that. This was one of the dark side of an otherwise turbolenter in May with a total of 50,900 flash loads, a value that is below the 10-year means. The highest flash loads were registered in Styria, followed by Lower Austria and Burgenland. Some extreme values of the month of May 2025 were a maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees in Innsbruck and the lowest temperature of -7.3 degrees in Liebenau -Gugu. On the precipitation side, Kolm-Saigivn and Warth with more than 200 l/m² were at the forefront, while Horn, Gars/Kamp and Krems emerged as the driest places-only 24 l/m² of rain fell here. The sunniest places were Waizenkirchen and Reichersberg with 231 and 226 hours of sunlight.
A look at the weather development
What does the climate say about the past few years? A look at the weather statistics shows that in 2024 the warmest year in Austria was in Austria, with records of 52 heat days in Vienna, where the temperatures climbed over 30 degrees. However, the past year in terms of sunshine remained below average, so Statista. However, the challenges of climate change are clearly noticeable, with both more common heat waves and heavy rain events. This makes many people in Austria worry about the future weather conditions.
The current weather conditions let us think about climate change. With 6.54 tons of CO2 emissions per capita, Austria continues to be one of the top 20 countries worldwide, which further underlines the need for climate protection measures. However, despite these challenges, around half of the Austrian population is optimistic and supports measures to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
The weather data for May 2025 illustrate how much the climatic conditions in Austria change and what challenges we have to face in order to continue to be good in the future.
