In Europe, higher expenses can only be recorded in Great Britain and Switzerland. In order to be able to afford your vacation, 53 percent of those surveyed reduce their leisure spending, for example when visiting a restaurant or in cultural activities. Larger purchases, such as a new car or renovations, are also pushed to the long bank by 50 percent of Austrians. Nevertheless, there is a positive trend: 73 percent of vacation planners want to support the local community with their expenses.

The travel behavior in change

The collection of statistics Austria provides extensive insights into the travel behavior of the Austrian resident population. Not only the number of trips, but also the profile of travelers and non -travelers are recorded. In 2022, 58.3 percent of Austrians undertook one or more vacation trips with at least four overnight stays, which is almost at the level of 2019. The Statistics Austria shows that domestic trips have risen: around 11.7 million trips took place in Austria, while about 10.6 million led abroad.

Popular travel destinations in Germany are still Styria (20.1 percent) and Salzburg (17.8 percent). Anyone who drives abroad is particularly targeted by Italy (23.4 percent). The trend is striking that 74 percent of travelers organize their vacation bookings privately, with online bookings for accommodations in 2022 over 18 percent. Booking.com remains the most used booking portal for package tours in Austria.

The immediate effects of environmental risks and geopolitical crises are also evident in the opinions of the Austrians, because 40.4 percent could imagine avoiding air travel for environmental reasons. The preferred arrival type also varies depending on the goal: 78.1 percent of travelers use their own car in Germany and to neighboring countries, while 75.9 percent choose the aircraft for long -distance travel.

The urge to travel continues, and the Austrians obviously have a good knack for choosing their travel destinations and methods. With the summer in sight, it can only be hoped that the desire to travel is not only characterized by the wallet, but also by conscious, sustainable travel behavior. Also the numbers of Statista show that the travel behavior changes year after year and at the same time continues to drive the economic impulse for the tourism industry.
