Moosburg transforms vacant properties into 180 modern, affordable apartments!

A lot is happening in the area of living space in Moosburg. The community has decided to convert empty buildings into affordable housing. Mayor Herbert Gaggl highlights the benefits for the environment and the financial relief for citizens. The pilot project called “PiBo” (Optimize Potential in the Existing Property) already includes eleven local properties, whose future use and redesign is being discussed with owners, architects and legal advisors. If successful, this innovative concept should also be used in other communities. My district reports on it.

A real highlight awaits the city of Klagenfurt in Welzenegg. Planning and signing of a building lease agreement for 180 new, barrier-free apartments were initiated here. The responsible actors, including Deputy Mayor Patrick Jonke and Dr. Stefan Konecny from the Carinthian Settlement Works have big plans: the number of existing apartments is to be significantly doubled from the current 60. This ambitious project involves the demolition of outdated post-war buildings from the 1950s to make room for modern living. This information comes from a recent press release from My Klagenfurt.

New living with vision

The new apartments will be built in an area that includes Semmelweisgasse, Dr.-Robert-Koch-Gasse, Auer-von-Welsbach-Straße and Dr.-Richard-Canaval-Gasse. The planners pay particular attention to the architecture and social infrastructure. An architectural competition will be tailored to the needs of future tenants and a resident representative will be involved in the planning. Those responsible are pleased that the tenants have been informed about the project and are reacting positively to it.

The project follows the motto “Quarter and WE” and aims to create a contemporary appearance that includes not only affordable living space, but also spacious green areas, a playground and even a mobility hub with bicycle rental. The funding from the state of Carinthia has already been guaranteed, so that planning can now move forward quickly after the contract has been signed. Construction on this pioneering residential complex is expected to begin in 2027.

The efforts to create sustainable housing are not only noticeable in Austria. In cities like Berlin, more and more construction projects are being built that rely on environmentally friendly concepts. Whether energy-efficient new buildings, green roofs or innovative wooden construction methods – the trend is towards sustainable, affordable living space. Some projects focus on social inclusion and create living space for people with special needs. Development City highlights these sustainable trends.

With these steps, Klagenfurt and Moosburg are setting an example for sustainable living space design that takes the needs of the population into account and at the same time focuses on environmentally friendly solutions.
