Memorial event at the Loibl: Memory of forgotten victims!
On Saturday, an international memorial event took place at the former Loibl-Nord concentration camp, which was organized by the Mauthausen Committee Carinthia/Koroška. The aim of this event was to recall the "forgotten" outer warehouse of Mauthausen in the memory of the population. Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) spoke in his speech, among other things, about upcoming anniversaries that commemorate the importance of the culture of remembrance. 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and we also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the state contract and 30 years of EU membership in Austria. Kaiser emphasized the relevance of the memorial culture and warned of currents that question democratic values.
Optimistically you look at the planned construction of a memorial on the north portal of the Loibl tunnel. Old Federal President Heinz Fischer warned that it is important to learn from history and not to forget what happened. Memories must not fade, and therefore the revival of such places is of great importance for the upcoming generation.
The outer warehouse Loibl-Nord
What do we know about the Loibl-Nord outer warehouse? It was a place of horror in which around 1,650 people were interned during the Second World War. The largest prisoner group consisted of French, followed by around 500 Polish prisoners. Around 150 Russians and 124 Yugoslav prisoners were also held there. The prisoners were often classified not only as political prisoners, but also as "criminal" when it comes to the number of German and Austrian prisoners. The maximum number of the interned was reached in August 1944 with around 1,300 people. Forced workers from Slovenia, Croatia and other countries were used here for the construction of the tunnel. This historical site is not only a place of memory, but also a memorial to forgetting.
voices from civil society
Many personalities were present at the commemoration, including the National Council MP Olga Voglauer and Ferlacher's Vice Mayor Monika Klengl. Tamara Joainig and Emilija Pirker, who spoke as the "voice of youth", emphasized the need to raise awareness of topics such as anti -Semitism and right -wing extremism. Manfred Morokutti, who reminded of the founding of the Mauthausen Committee Carinthia/Koroška 30 years ago, emphasized the central task of the association to convey young people to convey the corresponding skills. A greeting came from Claude Simon, the president of the Amicale de Mauthausen, and Saša Jese spoke as a descendant of a contemporary witness about the responsibility we bear.
The musical framework by Silvia Igerc and Arthur Ottowitz ensured a moving atmosphere and rounded off the event. At a time when awareness of our history is becoming increasingly important, it turns out here that the initiative for a memorial on the Loibl is not only a memory, but also an important teaching for the future.
