Drug deliveries on the Loibl Pass: Kroate confesses regular trade!

At the Loibl Pass border crossing, the officers were surprised by a special case last week. A 31-year-old Croatian citizen from Klagenfurt was arrested after an entry control when he promoted drugs from his truck. About 30 grams of cannabis and 100 grams of speed were discovered. On this occasion, the driver confessed to having introduced around 30 grams of cannabis and 100 grams of speed into Germany in the past two years. Another 30 grams of cannabis came to light in his apartment in Klagenfurt. The man was arrested and transferred to the Ferlach police inspection, where he is now reported to the Klagenfurt public prosecutor. So reports 5min.at.

drug trafficking: Problem in the upswing

The incident on the Loibl Pass is only part of the major problem that affects drug trafficking in Austria. A current case that was negotiated at a lay judge in Klagenfurt refers to a 44-year-old defendant. Between 2018 and 2024, the Viennese is said to have achieved a revenue of at least 132,500 euros by selling cannabis cabin. In total, he delivered 31 kilos of Cannabis to Klagenfurt, including 15 kilos last year. As reported by the [Kleine Zeitung] (https://www.kleinezeitung.at/kaernten/19249216/wiener-drogen-baron-in-kaernten-en-, the accused had 40 to 50 customers for the resale of the drug-containing herb. But the court not only evaluated the amount, but also the quality of the cannabis, which had a purity content of 17.58 percent, in finding the judgment.

The reasons for the criminal acts of the 44-year-old are complex. Family problems as well as the opening of a smoothie shop delayed due to Covid-19 contributed to his drastic decision. In his apartment, the investigators not only found drugs, but also the remains of a cannabis plantation, which also put on his criminal machinations.

The drug report 2024, which records the situation for illegal drugs in Austria annually, has also given insights into the existing drug market. The report, commissioned by the European observation center for drugs and drug addiction as well as the Ministry of Health, deals primarily to developments in drug policy and focuses on reducing demand. The comprehensive data show that companies and authorities are still required to develop preventive measures in order to curb drug trafficking ([Social Ministry.gv.at] (https://www.socialministerium.gv.at/themen/Gesundheit/drogen-undsucht/suchtmittellt-nps-rds-Drogen output materials/bericht-und-statistiken/bericht-zur-drogensitung-in-in-in austria.html)).

With a stricter drug problem, not only the authorities, but also society as a whole, have to look for solutions together to ensure safety and health in the communities. The case of the Croatian truck driver and the Viennese drug baron are the only examples in a variety of similar occurrences that draw attention to the great challenge of drug trafficking in our time.
