35 million euros for the barrier-free future of the music secondary school!
A lot is happening in the educational landscape in Hermagor: A shining example of future-oriented development is the music secondary school, which has a generous funding commitment totaling 3.5 million euros. This was confirmed by Vice Mayor Gerald Kubin, who, together with District Governor Dr. Heinz Pansi and the construction engineer DI Mathias Gucher presented the plans. Architect DI Arch. Stefanie Murero, who won the architectural competition for the renovation work, is at the forefront.
The first construction phase for the comprehensive renovation of the school rooms, the modernization of the entrance area and the design of the library and music rooms was already successfully implemented by 2018. The second round is now underway: renewed financing for the upcoming measures has been secured, and the planned work is scheduled to be completed by 2026. A particular focus will be on the renovation of the gymnasiums, the renewal of the connecting building and the adaptation of the changing areas.
Accessibility in focus
A central concern of the second construction phase is to improve accessibility. The plan is to install a new elevator and build a stair lift to ensure consistent accessibility for all students. As Architektenwahl emphasizes, accessibility is not only important for the participation of all people, but can also increase the value of a building and have a positive impact on the image of the institution. Designing accessible entrances, exits and interior spaces will be critical to a consistent accessible experience.
The installation of technical aids such as ramps and elevators must comply with legal standards to ensure safety and functionality. Measures such as non-slip floor coverings and wider door frames are also on the list. A look into the future shows that sustainable solutions are also taken into account in the planning, which will make the Hermagor Music Middle School a role model for modern educational institutions.
A school of the future
With currently around 250 students, the music middle school pursues the goal of a performance-oriented teaching and learning culture. Around 50% of students engage in non-binding sports exercises, which underlines the school's practical approach. The comprehensive renovation measures are intended not only to improve the teaching situation, but also to create the framework conditions for modern, practice-oriented education.
The outlook for completion in 2026 promises promising changes for the entire school community. By securing financial resources of 2.5 million euros from the state of Carinthia and around one million from the Hermagor school community association, a solid foundation has been laid to further advance the vision of a sustainable educational institution. “There’s something going on,” said Vice Mayor Gerald Kubin, “the coming years will be exciting!”
The Hermagor Music Middle School will therefore not only be a place of learning, but also a symbol of progress in education, in the spirit of a school that is ready to take on the challenges of the future.
