The new 380 kV line in Carinthia: power supply of the future!
On September 30, 2025, the rough route of the 380 kV line from Lienz to Obersielach was presented, a key initiative to improve the electricity supply in Carinthia.

The new 380 kV line in Carinthia: power supply of the future!
There is an important project coming up in the heart of Carinthia: the new 380 kV power line, which will run from Lienz in East Tyrol to Obersielach in Carinthia as part of the “Netzraum Kärnten” project. Loud Carinthian Chamber of Agriculture The route is around 190 kilometers long, with around 180 kilometers leading through various communities in Carinthia. This new line is intended to ensure the ring connection of the existing 380 kV lines in Austria by 2033.
The rough route draft was presented on Monday and shows the planned route from Lienz via Oberdrauburg, through the Drautal to Obersielach. The route is around 200 meters wide in most areas, but in some cases it is even wider. Existing 110 kV lines from Kärnten Netz GmbH will also be included, particularly between Oberdrauburg and Obersielach. A total of 58 communities in Carinthia and East Tyrol are affected by the planning, including Baldramsdorf, Brückl and Villach.
The next steps for planning
In order to further specify the route, detailed plans and environmental impact statements (EIS) are planned by 2027. In this context, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) will also follow. The fine route, which represents the technical feasibility, is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2026. In order to provide affected citizens with comprehensive information, the project team is planning information events in the first half of October. Over 90,000 invitations are sent to community residents to create transparency and answer questions.
An important problem is taking into account the geological conditions and possible natural hazards, which represent a central challenge in planning Austrian Power Grid. From the outset, a safe and environmentally friendly approach was pursued in order not to endanger Carinthia's diverse landscapes. As part of this process, gap closures within the 110 kV network are also planned to strengthen the power supply and promote the integration of renewable energies.
A look into the future
The total investment volume for this project is an impressive 9 billion euros. The project partners, Austrian Power Grid (APG) and Kärnten Netz (KNG), are keen to find a viable solution in close cooperation with the communities and citizens. An information center in Klagenfurt will be set up from the end of 2025 and will serve as a contact point for information about the status of the project. Despite the challenges, it remains clear: Carinthia is ready for the future of electricity supply.
