Domiziel St. Pölten: New places to live for young people with disabilities

In the heart of St. Pölten, the Domi Ziel opened its doors to new residents and new opportunities. Three young women with disabilities, aged 21, 22 and 24, have found a new home here. The official opening of the newly built extension was celebrated by, among others, State Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister and Deputy Mayor Harald Adl. The new living spaces not only offer security and community, but also perspectives that were previously difficult to achieve for many of the women.

The new conversion and extension in Domiziel now includes a total of 62 residential spaces, 28 of which were newly created. Before the expansion, the number was 34. The opening symbolizes not only a space to live in, but also a place that brings relief and hope for many families. “For us mothers, this place means security,” some of them emphasized, while their daughters had already moved in.

A project with challenges

Implementing the expansion brought with it some challenges. According to meinkreis.at, building during ongoing operations was not an easy task. Noise and flooding had to be managed. Nevertheless, the project was successfully implemented in cooperation with various institutions and organizations. The financial framework grew from an original plan of 2.5 million euros to ultimately around five million euros, with the state of Lower Austria supporting two million euros.

The municipal council of St. Pölten showed unanimous solidarity and assumed liability for the financing, which underlines the importance of inclusion in the city. Vice Mayor Michael Kögl also emphasized how important the idea of inclusion is for the community.

Care options at Domiziel

The target group is clearly defined in Domiziel: people with intellectual and multiple disabilities. The residents are offered support in their everyday lives as part of regular care in four groups, which include a total of 34 people. Thanks to a dedicated team of 15 carers, residents can promote their independence and participate in social life. Integration into the community and the possibility of switching to outpatient living arrangements are the focus of care. Each group has its own separate living area, which enables individual care.

Inclusive living arrangements like these are not just simple living solutions. They are a step towards a society that takes the needs of all people into account. According to [aktion-mensch.de](https://www.aktion-mensch.de/inklusion/wohnen/wohn Formen-fuer-menschen-mit-behinderung/inklusive-wgs), factors such as age, abilities and cultural background should be taken into account in inclusive neighborhoods. The planning is often done with the participation of the future residents, so that an equal life in the social and social environment is possible.

In St. Pölten, the Domi Ziel shows that real progress in inclusion can be achieved through the commitment of the city and supporting organizations. For many new residents and their families, these new living spaces are a reason for joy and hope for a positive future.
