The origins of the dispute go back to 1866. In between, years of economic difficulties, which had only fueled the conflict. Above all, the robbery of fishing grass by the Ruster population, which was actually intended for the Oggau stables, led to tensions. The escalation culminated in the so -called "Seetlacht am Neusiedler See" when Oggauer and Ruster met on November 6, 1866. Historian Martin Krenn emphasizes that the argument went into a warlike argument and the Ruster, on a holiday, drove with wagons for robbery from Streu to Oggau.

of peace and its symbolism

The official peace was sealed by the two local chiefs, Mayor Thomas Schmid from Oggau and Gerold Stagl from Rust. The ceremony was supplemented with a symbolic handover of a fishing grass, from Stagl to Schmid. "This is a positive signal for working between our communities," said Schmid. The Landtag President Astrid Eisenkopf emphasized the importance of social cohesion in her speech.

At the Hotter border, a stone bust, designed by artist Rudi Pinter, is reminiscent of the eventful history. This statue should not only document the events of the past, but also serve as a memorial for future generations. In addition, a brochure about the eventful history of conflicts is distributed to all households in both communities in order to bring in the importance of peace and cooperation in particular to the children of the elementary schools of Rust and Oggau.

The events of the "Seuchlacht"

The "Seuchlacht" itself began during a service when Rusters broke up with weighing and robbed Oggau litter - an act that finally got involved in the Oggau. The Oggauer, unarmed and in feast clothing, opposed the intruders. The Ruster City captain Odorfer gave the command to open the fire on the Oggauer, which had tragic consequences and led to two deaths. An incident that made the action escalate quickly. The Oggauer bravely defended themselves and were able to push back some rusters, who then lived in lifts and wagons. After a few investigations, prison terms for numerous participants were finally pronounced - 14 ruster and 20 Oggauer had to expect punishments between one month and one year.

The latest developments show that even lengthy conflicts can end when both sides are ready to approach each other. And so the residents of Oggau and Rust can look forward to a peaceful future.
