Safe way to school: Illmitz elementary school starts bus school campaign!

A very special focus on the safety of the students while driving the bus took the Illmitz elementary school with the “My Bus School” campaign, which took place today on June 2, 2025. This initiative, which was launched in cooperation between the general accident insurance institution (AUVA) and the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV), has a clear goal: to draw attention to the dangers of stops and during the bus ride. According to Meinzärzirk this is particularly important, because in 2023 71 children in Austria were seriously injured in school bus accidents.

The most common causes of accidents are getting in and out of the bus, waiting at the stop and walking past the vehicle. Bernd Toplak, prevention expert at AUVA, makes it clear how important it is to recognize these dangers early and learn a safe handling. This campaign not only offers the children theoretical knowledge, but also practical exercises in the form of conversations about dangers, worksheets and playful activity.

Learning safe behaviors

exactly how the campaign works, KFV actions : The children learn in five subject areas how best to behave. These areas include the behavior on the way back and forth, at the stop, when getting in and out and out in the bus.

A highlight of this practical traffic education is the brake test, which shows the children how important the distance to a bus is when it stops or bends. In this way, knowledge is conveyed and the right behavior is consolidated to ensure a safe way to school.

Mobility formation from small to

The importance of such programs cannot be assessed high enough. According to berlin.de , mobility education and traffic education begins and accompanies the students up to the 10th grade. These measures are treated via various subjects and also outside of regular lessons in order to give the children extensive skills. In primary school, at least ten hours of mobility education per grade and school year are planned.

Close cooperation with partners who offer prevention and teaching projects for schools is crucial. These partners not only support the implementation of such actions, but also help to integrate traffic safety into the everyday life of the students. The goal is clear: the independent and safe way to school should be promoted to reduce vehicle traffic from schools and to improve the infrastructure accordingly.

The "My bus school" campaign is therefore a small but important step towards more security for our children, which is also to be desired by the Illmitz elementary school that it continues to have a good hand for such preventive projects!
