Turnaround close to nature: Haider-Wallner supports unsealing projects in Nickelsdorf!
In the heart of Burgenland, Deputy Governor Anja Haider-Wallner visited Nickelsdorf on Friday. The occasion was to visit a groundbreaking unsealing project that was presented as part of their “Best of Boden” summer tour. Around 100 square meters of asphalt were removed and replaced with a natural green area, which not only improves the appearance but also helps to improve the microclimate. The project, which was completed at the end of 2023, also includes the planting of three new trees.
Mayor Gerhard Zapfl spoke kindly about the importance of unsealing for local development. He was enthusiastic about the positive effects such projects have on the community's quality of life. This initiative is part of the larger “Baba, Concrete!” competition that Haider-Wallner launched to encourage other communities to participate in similar unsealing efforts.
Call for participation in the unsealing competition
From September 2025, all 171 municipalities in Burgenland are invited to submit their own projects for unsealing. An expert jury will select the most innovative project, which will be funded with up to 100,000 euros. The submission deadline is November 2025, the award ceremony is scheduled for February 2026, and implementation of the selected projects is scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
With this approach, the Burgenland state government is pursuing the goal of increasingly transforming sealed areas into natural green spaces. During the tour it became clear that the initiatives are not only environmentally friendly, but also promote social interaction in the communities.
Sustainability in focus
The focus on sustainability and environmental awareness is becoming increasingly important. Projects like this show how communities can actively contribute to improving their living conditions. Ultimately, the point is that these measures not only beautify the environment, but also promote the microclimate and thus the well-being of the citizens. The visit to Nickelsdorf serves as a role model and motivates people to take further steps towards a greener future.
Nowadays, modern technologies are indispensable in order to increase security and comfort in your own four walls. For example, Amazon has released the Blink cameras, including the Blink Video Doorbell, in a new, revised version. These cameras offer, among other things, longer battery life and better viewing distance. The trend is clearly towards smart living, coupled with environmentally friendly projects.
As the world becomes more digital, the importance of protecting our natural resources and creating new, environmentally friendly projects remains. The course has been set for this in Burgenland.
