With over 31,000 media: Burgenland's libraries on the upswing!

Eisenstadt, Österreich - The Burgenland Chamber of Labor places great emphasis on promoting education and media culture. The local libraries about 31,000 media on offer, which are available free of charge for all employees. The borrowing of the past year includes a total of 152,451 , of which 50.183 in digital form. The increase in the on-site visits, which, with 31.702 , lists approximately 3,000 more than in the previous year. The online channels recorded 33,000 access, which is an increase of 12 percent .

The wide range not only includes books, but also magazines, audio books, board games, ereader and even film streaming. As the Chamber of Labor Burgenland , users can also borrow DVDs, games and foreign language literature free of charge. The young audience is particularly addressed by the "Reading Eve Tax Book" series in Eisenstadt.

In the course of the application of the libraries, various events are on the program in June. On 4. June a reading by Katharina Köller takes place in Eisenstadt, and on 5. June starts the second round of the AK book talks in the Oberwart Stadtgarten. Before that, 950 new registrations were registered, so that the number of annual readers is now 3,777 .

The Chamber of Labor also offers workshops for various age groups that cover topics from kindergarten to the Matura class. Group tours and school visits are also free of charge, which further increases the accessibility of the offers. The Library statistics show that libraries not only act as places of borrowing, but also significant facilities for promoting reading culture.

A look over the borders

At the international level, the image of the libraries is quite diverse. According to current statistics, there are around 8,860 public and scientific libraries in Germany, which in 2023 recorded a total of 350 million loans. In this case, too, the trend towards digital media is unmistakable, since more than 60.7% of the budget of scientific libraries are invested in e-media.

Despite the challenges associated with household consolidation measures, the importance of libraries as education centers and sites of cultural exchange remains undisputed. The development and commitment of the Burgenland Chamber of Labor is a good example of how to sustainably promote education and access to media with local initiatives.
