Gastronomers in Burgenland demand fair wages for seasonal workers!
In the southern Burgenland, it is bubbling: restaurateurs make their displeasure through the support of the country air. An anonymously permanent restaurateur reports growing dissatisfaction among his colleagues. Franz Perner, managing director of tourism and leisure management, confirms the symptoms and criticizes the "falsified" labor market, which makes life difficult for companies. Despite the standard remuneration for top service staff of around 2,300 euros net, companies offer only 1,500 euros gross for unskilled personnel, which is considered far too low according to the chamber.
The situation is tense because the restaurateurs urgently look for seasonal workers, not for interns. The minimum wage for seasonal workers is now also around 2,300 euros net.
renovations in Burgenland
A ray of hope in the middle of these challenges is the upcoming renovation of the castle restaurant in Güssing. The restaurant will be rebuilt for around two million euros and the opening is planned for early July. Around 25 events are planned in summer, which requires additional helpers. The castle restaurant is supervised by guest houses and kitchen Burgenland GmbH, which now have over 1,300 beds at six locations in Burgenland. Managing Director Klaus Glavanics and Oliver Snurer successfully implemented the merger of the guest houses with the Kitchens Burgenland in 2023.
The seasonal work is an important pillar in the catering trade. The seasonal fluctuations, such as in beach cafes in summer or ski huts in winter, flexible recruitment is necessary. Seasonal workers can often be found in typical positions such as service power, chefs or auxiliary staff from various restaurants. The offer ranges from beach and sea restaurants to event catering and beer gardens. With a temporary employment relationship, which usually applies from May 1st to September 30th, many employees are there.
legal framework conditions
The legal framework is clear: seasonal labor contracts that are limited to contain a clear end date and cannot be terminated on one side. In the event of early termination by the employer, the employees are entitled to compensation, as well as if they cancel themselves. It is important that working conditions correspond to the legal regulations and that the employment relationships are well documented. Seasonal workers are also entitled to vacation that is calculated proportionately in accordance with the Federal Vacation Act.
The industry also offers incentives due to the increasing earning opportunities - up to 3,000 euros gross for service staff. Seasonal workers can also use their free time to enjoy sports in the impressive Alps and on the beautiful lakes. Many experience working in these temporary jobs as a way to close new acquaintances and build valuable networks.
How the situation in Burgenland continues remains exciting. Gastronomy faces challenges, but with the right measures and a fair remuneration, wages could perhaps be released. Hopefully the restaurateurs will soon turn to the right places to receive the necessary support that they are entitled to.
