Attention, cyclists! Rad lobby warns of dangerous overtaking maneuvers!
On June 9, 2025, an important action week starts in Burgenland, which deals with the dangers of cycling in road traffic. The cycling lobby warns of the serious consequences that can have close overtaking maneuvers from cars for cyclists. Falls and accidents due to sudden dodging to the edge of the road are not uncommon. Many drivers are often not aware of the legal regulations and therefore often act out of ignorance. Kurier reports that the bike lobby Burgenland from June 10th to 13th, from Parndorf to Güssing, execution campaigns carried out.
The cycling lobby is supported by the mobility center of the state of Burgenland, which emphasizes the need to consider all road participants. Christine Zopf-Renner, the head of the mobility center, emphasizes how important it is that all road users adhere to the traffic rules. Stefan Haider from the cycling lobby underlines that a sufficient overtaking distance significantly strengthens the feeling of security of cyclists.
Action week against close overtaking maneuvers
The action week is designed to address the minimum distance when overtaking and to increase traffic safety. Various actions are planned in the following communities:
- 10. June: Güssing, 4-17 p.m., Verwerverkehr Wiener Straße/Shopping Center.
- 11. June: Parndorf, 7-8 a.m., roundabout Bruckerstraße/Neusiedlerstraße/Neudorferstrasse; Eisenstadt, Mattersburgerstraße/Rusterstraße roundabout; Oberwart, 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., roundabout bypass/Unterwartterstrasse.
- 12. June: Eisenstadt, 7-8 a.m., Neusiedlerstraße/Krautgartenweg; Rudersdorf, 4-17 p.m., Antoniusplatz.
- 13. June: Breitenbrunn/Winden, 7-8 a.m., roundabout B50; Eisenstadt, from 1 p.m., information stand in EZE Rusterstrasse.
A central concern of the cycling lobby is the demand for clearly visible information boards about the statutory overtaking on streets without a safe alternative cycle route. A problem is pointed out that remains unresolved in many places: abruptly opened car doors are a significant danger to cyclists, as the cycling lobby explains in its campaign "distance makes it safe". Finally, a minimum distance of 1.5 meters should become the norm in urban areas and two meters, rounded off by strict restrictions regarding the 30 km/h exception, which was introduced in the 33rd StVO amendment (§ 5).
controls and traffic safety
In Germany, the legal distances when overtaking cyclists are increasingly being discussed. A police survey in Leipzig shows that controls have not yet been explicitly carried out in this regard because the markings are missing on the road. According to a report by mdr , the plan is to change this through a distance measuring system.
The legal responsibility for compliance with the minimum distance lies with drivers. The cycling lobby appeals to all road users to be aware of their responsibility and to ensure more safety in road traffic. The importance of education and sensitization is clear: cyclists and drivers have to respect each other in order to avoid accidents.
