Burgenland has the lowest income – what the AK is now demanding!
A current analysis by the Chamber of Labor (AK) makes it clear that incomes in Burgenland require special attention compared to the rest of the country. According to the brochure “Burgenland in Numbers”, the workplace-related income of 2,439 euros is below the Austrian average and is the lowest of all federal states. Even if the resident population in Burgenland has an average of 3,065 euros, which is above the Austrian average of 2,909 euros, employees in Burgenland earn an average of 11.89 percent less than the median income in Austria. However, it is nice to see that the income gap has narrowed in the last three years. My district reports that the city of Eisenstadt stands out as the top earner with an amount of 2,863 euros among the places of work.
A look at gender-specific wages shows that there is also a significant gender pay gap in Burgenland. Men there earn an average of 2,743 euros, while women only earn 2,024 euros. According to the AK, the highest income difference between the sexes can be observed in Oberwart, where men earn an average of 2,841 euros and women only 1,926 euros. The smallest differences, however, can be found in Eisenstadt and the surrounding area at 673 euros and 658 euros. This makes it clear that the gender pay gap is also an urgent problem in our region

The situation in Burgenland is also reflected throughout Austria, where the gender pay gap will be 18.3 percent in 2023, according to Eurostat. This makes Austria one of the EU countries with the largest gender pay gaps BMWF determines. Only a third of this difference can be explained by factors such as industry, occupation and education, while the majority of the discrepancy cannot be statistically verified.
Statistics Austria has identified a number of factors that influence the gender pay gap, including length of service and the number of working hours. The federal government has also launched various initiatives to promote women's career prospects, particularly in MINT professions. Measures such as Girls' Day should be strengthened in order to improve equal opportunities.
The positive development of income
Although the income gap to the top Austrians still exists, workplace-related income in Burgenland increased by 8.6 percent from 2022 to 2023. Those responsible see this as positive progress, although there is still a lot of work to be done to further improve income in Burgenland. The AK calls on politicians to take the right steps based on valid facts and thus create a fairer income situation for all employees in Burgenland.
In summary, it can be said that incomes in Burgenland offer both challenges and positive developments. It remains to be hoped that targeted measures and public awareness will pave the way to fairer wages throughout the state, because there is still something that can be done!
