Digital babysitting: How tablets in restaurants raise children!
more and more often you can see a picture in restaurants that many parents should not be new: children who stare at digital end devices with their eyes while the parents relax their food. A current article by DerStandard reports of an increasing trend in which children are placed in catering operations in front of cell phones and tablets. According to this observation, which began in a children's hotel in Burgenland three years ago, this behavior spreads in numerous local, from chic Viennese cafés to high hotels.
In many of these restaurants, the children are often found near tables with digital devices. What is special: they often sit there without headphones, the devices usually run at full volume. Parents do not seem to disturb the background noise. The children are busy with a wide variety of activities that range from "shooter games" to "DumbsCrolling".
health concerns and recommendations
The World Health Organization therefore calls for more investments in digital education and better mental health care. Overall, it is recommended to limit the screen time of children depending on their age. The media guidelines of the German Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) offer an important orientation, which advise you in detail: under 3 years of age should not be given a screen time, for children between 3 and 6 years a maximum of 30 minutes per day and for children from 6 to 9 years a day. From around 11 years of age, the use of smartphones is possible, whereby individual media literacy plays a role.
